Schooner Hotel, Alnmouth
About the Hotel
The Schooner Hotel is a heritage-listed 17th-century inn located in Alnmouth, Northumberland. It is notable for having hosted famous figures such as Charles Dickens and King George III. The hotel is also recognized as one of Great Britain's most haunted establishments, having won this title twice. Its coastal village setting is a key feature of its historical and cultural significance.
Location
Situated in the picturesque coastal village of Alnmouth, the Schooner Hotel is a short drive from Alnwick Castle and Alnwick Garden, both within 15 minutes. The nearest major airport is Newcastle Airport, approximately 65 km away. Guests may find transportation options accessible, although the hotel has received complaints regarding parking difficulty.
Rooms
Each guest room at the Schooner Hotel offers free Wi-Fi and features a television. The rooms include private bathrooms along with tea and coffee making facilities. Decor in the rooms has been described as shoddy, with some reports noting thin towels and signs of neglect. Visitors have also mentioned issues such as aerial cables coming through the outside window, contributing to an unkempt appearance.
Eat & Drink
The hotel houses an Indian restaurant named Spice Galleon, which has been a part of the hotel's dining offerings. However, the restaurant has received scrutiny for its food hygiene, recently facing a closure due to a rat infestation. Guests can also enjoy drinks at the bar or snacks in a coffee shop within the premises.
Leisure & Business
The hotel features two bars and offers a garden area for relaxation. Regular paranormal investigation evenings attract guests interested in its haunted reputation. Nearby, Alnmouth Village Golf Club and Warkworth Golf Course present opportunities for leisure activities, although the hotel has faced safety and compliance issues in the past.

Reviews and Ratings
The hotel has its ups and downs. The rooms were a mixed bag, noisy with some issues, but the new shower was impressive and the potential for improvement is clear. The service left a bit to be desired, and the location was nice though a bit inconvenient at times. Dining had its flaws, but overall, the experience was salvageable.
My stay at the hotel was a mix of positives and negatives. The location was excellent, just across the road from the beach and in a fantastic seaside spot, making it easy to explore nearby attractions. However, the room felt poorly decorated and had issues with lighting, damp walls, and unhelpful staff responses, which made me question the value for money I paid.
The hotel is conveniently located near the beach and offers easy access to various attractions like castles. The rooms had some issues, including no view and ongoing construction work outside. However, the service and dining experience were lacking. The hotel is making improvements, but some areas still need attention.
I stayed at the hotel and had a mixed experience. The rooms were not up to standard; they smelled stale, had a rusty towel rail, and the shower was moody. Additionally, they charged £40 for my two small dogs even though we didn't stay the second night. It was probably one of the worst places I've ever stayed. On the bright side, the Sun Hotel also at the same price provided a small dog charge but offered an amazing room and a fantastic breakfast for the same price.
The hotel is ideally located in the center of Alnmouth, making it a great base for exploring the village and the nearby attractions. The room lacked a view but was cozy, and the service was attentive. The dining experience had some shortcomings, but the overall value for money was decent.
